The pre-planned interim analysis of a Phase III trial evaluating Alpharadin™ in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer and symptomatic bone metastases has shown a significant improvement in overall survival. Median overall survival in the group treated with Alpharadin™ was 14.0 months against 11.2 months for placebo, meeting the primary endpoint of the ALSYMPCA study.
Based on a recommendation from the Independent Data Monitoring Committee, the study will now be unblinded in light of the positive results, and patients on the placebo arm will be offered treatment with Alpharadin™. “Based on the observed survival benefit and its safety profile, Alpharadin™ may become an important treatment option for patients with bone metastases from advanced prostate cancer,” said Dr. Chris Parker, principal investigator for the ALSYMPCA study.
Alpharadin™ is an investigational drug of Bayer HealthCare and Algeta ASA, Oslo, Norway.
